I don't understand the loud-music thing at social events either. I can understand it at rock concerts or any other event that is solely about the music - even though I'm too old to enjoy that myself, I still remember when I wanted it loud. But I have never understood why anyone would want loud music, or anything else that diminishes interaction between your guests, at a wedding or other social function. Yet it happens all the time! Usually people abandon the hall to continue their conversations, leaving the poor band playing to a handful of people.
