Making your own birthday cake sounds perfectly natural to me! But then I've been baking my own birthday cake ever since I learned to bake--some time back in grade school. If I make it, it will be exactly what I want it to be! (which is usually somewhat less sweet than other people make cakes, but spread with jam between the layers and covered in whipped cream and berries)
