If the shelves are deep enough, you might consider my current system for paperbacks: Put the books vertical in the back row, and horizontal in front. You need a bit of clearance for maneuvering back-row books out, but not as much as you would to make the back row equally visible with risers. The only hassle is the trend toward "tall" paperbacks in recent years.
