Holistic understanding of the NYC subway? Remember that it started as three separate entities... four if you count the H+M/PATH lines to NJ. (And with all that, it STILL doesn't go to LaGuardia.) I'm not sure a *truly* holistic view is possible... but it is rarely necessary to have even a nearly-holistic view.
