One of my trunk novels has a subplot of the girl taken for a boy, with the resolution that years later, having lucked into a position that allows her to practice her craft (fine smithing), she sends for the young woman she had a relationship with. A problem of that particular novel is that there are way too many subplots. If I resurrected it now it would be a series, with separate novels to resolve the various subplots. But that milieu wasn't medieval, it was more on the order of late Renaissance (her eventual employer being on the order of a Cellini).
