Yes. Totally agree with your conclusion. I'm leaning toward delicious writing of the sort you describe myself, and finding myself impatient with, as you put it, "plot/character catnip with poor writing." I want beautiful language and mind-blowing plot with compelling characterization, and if it takes a deep hard look at some major issues as well...yummy.
