Extra Vacation

So I get to take an unanticipated vacation day tomorrow, courtesy of United Airlines canceling my flight today. (Not their fault, really -- evidently weather kept the plane in Chicago last night.) Since the Big B has been encouraging us to use up vacation days, there won't be any complaints on that end. And, in the grand scheme of things, there are worse ways to spend a vacation day than hanging out in a free hotel room with books, movie channels, and free internet (although the wireless network sucks seriously).

Snowed in

I fondly remember getting snowed in for an extra day at a ConFusion (late January, near Detroit, around 1980). It became a relaxacon for the extra day. No programming per se, lots of time for hanging out with friends (old and new). This was back when filking started at midnight at cons - we wound up with an afternoon filk, and with very little competition from other things had great attendance and a really marvelous time. Since the hotel normally got fresh baked goods delievered daily there was a shortage of bread - and several attendees headed back to the kitchen to make bread for everyone. (The hotel staff was amazed that so many people at our SF con even knew HOW to make bread - though granted it was mostly those who were also in the SCA.)

People had had lots of time to sleep in, so had recovered from sleep debt. While some were anxious about getting home, most found it a marvelous extension of the con.

Atlantian 12th/13th/14th Night during the blizzard of 1996... the hotel ran out of bread, and ran out of the ingredients to make more. At which point the SCAdians went back to their hotel rooms and brought out flour and yeast, and made bread.

This was the same group that, on Sunday evening, took over the kitchen (because the staff had been there since noon on Saturday) and cooked for the entire dinner shift. (Her Majesty mopped the floor afterwards.)

Yes, that hotel's wireless needs a serious upgrade. I couldn't connect with my almost-brand-new (4 months old) MacBook Pro.

Well, actually I was referring to the Best Western at the airport -- I didn't have any problems with the convention hotel's wireless.
