Review: Young Victoria

To test my flu recovery, I decided to take in a movie today. (I tested my recovery yesterday by making some more housecleaning progress, but found I was still a bit woozy.) I had this vague feeling that there were some films that I'd meant to see that were likely to be timing out of the theaters soon, but the only candidate I could turn up in movies.com was Young Victoria. It's a very pretty costume flick -- I take that back, it's a sumptuously lush costume flick. The 19th century is not my costume era, so I couldn't provide a detailed critique, but I very much enjoyed the visuals. The acting was good; the production values were excellent; the plot was ... well ... nothing much happens, you know? It's basically a slice-of-life from the several years before and after Victoria's ascension to the throne, focusing on her romance with Albert and on her attempts to take control of her life and identity. It was sweet, but not exactly "dramatic". My overall judgment: it would work nicely for a stitch-and-bitch DVD session.

Back to work tomorrow. We'll see if any new chickens have hatched in my absence. Can I get back to "normal" one of these days?

Doesn't normal involve headless chickens?

Not normally.

For some value of "normal".

YMMV

Meanwhile, the two comments above are a wonderful paradox...

Hey, I'm going to be in San Francisco till Sunday. If life permits, maybe we could have coffee or something?

Absolutely! My evenings and Saturday are currently unscheduled. What does your schedule look like?

Thursday or Saturday evening would work for me. Do you (still) have my cell phone number?

Thursday would be ideal. (I.e., tomorrow --right?) Yes, I have your cell number. I'll call you tomorrow to set up details. What's the best time to call? Ideally I'll be BARTing over if that's convenient for where you're staying.

And now today!

You can call me any time after 11 AM or so (I've got a 10 AM interview, and after that I'm just hanging out and trying to beat my talk into shape). I'm staying in downtown convention-land, near the Powell exit, so BART is definitely convenient.
