Up on the roof

While sitting here doing e-mail, I heard a sound like someone walking around on a bare floor. I live alone. The cat was sitting innocently nearby in view. "Burglars!" I thought, and advanced towards the stairs. That was when I realized the sound was coming from overhead. I looked up at the skylight over the stair landing and saw

a squirrel.

A squirrel, clomping around on top of the (very resonant) skylight and licking it. I have no idea what the licking was all about, but it was quite unmistakable from the shadow of the little tongue flicking in and out of visibility on the skylight.

...don't get me started on Squirrels. And hide your chocolate.

Ours like to leap from the tree outside out bedroom window onto the roof, usually with a loud thump and scrabbling noises, which is quite distracting enough *without* the skylight-licking.

There aren't enough trees near my house to have squirrels on the roof.
And I'm skylight deprived.
My favorite roof noise story is from several years ago when it sounded like a couple of clumsy teenage boys on the roof. Finally went out the front door one more time to witness 3 ducks flying away.
