Lunch-plan whiplash

In theory, [livejournal.com profile] thread_walker and I were supposed to do lunch, but she got ambushed by an unexpected meeting and it fell through. Then I got a call from the Ford service department saying that they'd finished the routine service and checked out the overheating issue, and there was a problem with the fan being intermittent, and there were some leaks in the radiator, and something else, and it was looking like a bit over $800. So I told them I needed to think about it because that was pretty much at my threshold for simply moving up the schedule on buying a new car. So I'd bike over and pick it up on my lunch hour. Then two minutes later the guy calls back and says, "Well, if you're comfortable about just checking the fluids regularly, you can get by with just replacing the thingamajig that controls the fan, which is $150." (Ok, he didn't say "thingamajig", but I'm spacing on the right word.) So that was good news, but left me again without lunch plans (and having left my lunch at home because I was supposed to be going out). I actually knew about the whole keeping an eye on the coolant levels thing, because it's been dripping occasionally for some time. So I'll get the car back tomorrow in adequate shape for a road trip, which is good.

I believe that the "thingamajig" is called a thermostat...

Nah, it was something more obscure than that. I think the word "relay" was involved.

Yeah, in many vehicles the thermostat triggers a relay to turn the fan on/off (the relay also controls hi/lo speed if you have a multispeed radiator fan). In such vehicles, the relay getting frotzed that would certainly cause fan issues.

After the experience with the leaking water pump and the blown head gasket last year I would be very wary - by all means, the $150 option, which is bad enough, but my next step would be to step up the new car search so that if things got worse, I'd be prepared.

step up the new car search

Oh, I know exactly what I'm going to be buying. But I'm hoping to manage to time it so that it's a 50th birthday present for me next May. Some of the money involved is also tied up in 6-month certificates, so it would make things less convenient if I don't stick to the schedule. But still, if I had to go out and buy a new car tomorrow, I could which is a comfortable feeling.
