J really helps at the level of "people I don't know that well yet that I'd like to get to know better but I have no idea how to find an opening."
A lot of what we do here *is* the stuff that builds friendships, which is why I get annoyed when people say that internet connections 'aren't real' - it's the sharing of daily life as much as the opening of your soul, and when I finally _do_ meet people in person, I find that they match up to their writing.
