Plotting my getaway
Aug. 14th, 2007 10:15 pmIf I'm going to take my little roadtrip vacation this summer, I have to get cracking. The basic plan is to take a week's vacation, drive meanderingly up to Seattle and back, enjoy a bunch of mountain and forest scenery, and visit a bunch of people that I know along the way. You'd think it would be relatively simple -- all I have to do is identify the set of weeks where I have no un-dodgeable commitments on either weekend, nor during the week between, present that selection of weeks to the set of people I'm interested in visiting for feedback, then select the week with the optimal number of visit opportunities. And I'm being pretty weasely about which potential commitments can be dodged. I'm only firmly committed to the Mists Bardic competition, a parental visit generally around September 15/16, West Kingdom collegium on 10/20, a co-worker's wedding on 10/27, and then the mid-week commitments to two Cal Shakes performances (8/23, 10/4) and my reserach open houses (9/12, 10/10, 11/14). In combination, however, this means that I'm looking at the following:
8/25 to 9/2 (hmm, actually 9/3 if I get Labor Day off -- need to look that up) which falls in the "Ack! That's awfully soon given that I haven't made any arrangements yet!" category, as well as risking people being unavailable for visiting over the holiday weekend (either that, or it means me competing with everyone else in the world for my sightseeing locations).
9/22 to 9/30 -- which looks like the best bet
11/3 to 11/11 (or the following week) -- which is starting to get uncomfortably close to Thanksgiving
So it looks like rather than offering my potential visitees a selection of options and then setting the date, I've pretty much picked my vacation date and just need to find out who will be available for visiting. So if any of my friends living along a rough interpretation of the SF-Seattle corridor would be interested in having me drop by for coffee or lunch or something during the week of 9/22 to 9/30, let me know. (Of course, you may already be on my list of people to contact, but no harm in duplication.)
