Mild Freakout: I had a moment of very mild freaking out when one of the admins handed me an inter-office envelope (she'd seen it sitting in my box for a few days** and was going my way) with a Costume Con progress report in it. The alternate universe in which I would give my work address for any personal mail is several dimensions to the left. Then I saw the post-it from [livejournal.com profile] staffordcastle saying something about saving the postage. Oh. Duh. I'm not sure I knew she was on the con-com but it's hardly a surprise.

**We have an inter-office mail system. Almost nobody uses it for anything except corporate publications and non-time-sensitive HR stuff. It can take up to a week for something to make its way through inter-office mail, whereas it takes a maximum of perhaps 10 minutes to walk the document directly to the recipient's in-box. Or have someone else walk it -- I've been more likely to be the "someone else" in that transaction. So I never expect anything important to be in my office mail box, and I only pass by that end of the hallway casually maybe once a week. You can see how the brokenness of the system perpetuates itself.

Mild Frustration: There's a news item today about the Oakland Police busting a major West Oakland (i.e., my part of town) stolen property ring, including a warehouse with massive quantities of items stolen in burglaries over the last decade. They're having an "open house" tomorrow for people to come an identify their stolen property. It's within the realm of possibility (although a rather low likelihood) that my laptop (stolen a couple years ago) might be among the haul. If I were in town, I might go poke through the haul, but I won't be. And none of the news articles mentions what one can do if one isn't available for the open house tomorrow. And the Oakland Police web site doesn't have any mention of the event, much less information on what to do if you want to make other arrangements. On the other hand, my police report includes all the relevant model and serial number information, so if it were in the haul, then in theory they should contact me eventually. In theory. (This is the drastically under-staffed Oakland Police Department, remember.) And it strikes me that a laptop isn't likely to have sat around unfenced for a couple of years. And, after all, my insurance paid on the loss and I bounght a new machine, so all I'd be getting is the satisfaction. Still, mild frustration.
