1. After having missed the last several, I made it to today's Ed Levin Park workparty. (For the non-West Kingdom folks reading: we trade sweat equity at the park for credit towards site rental.) My crew was digging un-ditches. That is, we were turning a small run-off gully down the middle of the riding/hiking trail ...

(oops, darn that autorotation thing! too lazy to fix it at the moment)

... into a trail with no gully ...

At its deepest points, the gully was up to 1.5 feet deep and had undercut chambers, half-full of scummy water with entire ecosystems. The part we worked on never got much deeper than half of that and was dry.

2. As I usually do when my annual bonus and tax refunds roll around, I indulged in a couple of useful but semi-frivolous purchases. The first was a dedicated omelette pan. I'm tired of trying to make omelettes and having them stick to the pan. Ordinarily I dislike non-stick coatings, for one thing because eventually they start sticking. But I'm hoping that if I never put anything but eggs in this one, it'll keep functioning properly.

3. The second frivolous purchase was an Optoma Pico PK-101 micro projector that works off the iPhone. Somewhat annoyingly, it only products Apple-compatible videos and iPhoto slideshows. To mitigate this, I find that PowerPoint has a push-button function that will turn a presentation file into a folder of image files. A second push-button function in iPhoto can turn the entire file into a slideshow. I don't anticipate using this for serious lectures and presentations, but it's utterly cool.

4. My weekly CSA box included pea greens. I'm still in the process of figuring out which parts are intended to be edible. Let's just say that tonight's meal included larger than usual amounts of roughage. But it was very delicious roughage when sautéed with minced garlic and deglazed with the juice of bitter oranges.

5. Short work-week! But that means I have to get my act together for the carpentry project [livejournal.com profile] thread_walker and I are planning for Friday.
