hrj: (LHMP)
In six more entries, I will reach publication #100 of the Lesbian Historic Motif Project. (I'll have posted something over 170 separate blog posts, given that some publications have involved multiple postings.) That's a pretty impressive milestone, if I do say so myself. And I see no reason to stop now: my working database currently lists 271 publications and I'm very behind at mining the bibliographies of covered publications for new titles to add. So other than continuing to post, what sort of plans do I have for the future?

Giveaway!

The most immediate plan is a combined celebration of the LHMP and the forthcoming release of my second novel, The Mystic Marriage. While I'm not saying that the fan base for both projects is identical, there's probably a heavy overlap. So starting with the posting of #100 (for which I've specially chosen Emma Donoghue's Passions Between Women) I'm inviting people to link, tweet, post, blog, whatever about your favorite Lesbian Historic Motif Project item (nothing fancy -- just get the word out) to be eligible for a chance to win a free copy of The Mystic Marriage in the format of your choice. I'll post more details on how to help me track entries; I'll try to keep a balance between keeping it simple and making sure no one gets lost in the shuffle.

Indexing!

When I first started the project, I had a list of keywords on each entry that were intended to help find all entries that referenced a particular topic, source, or individual. It was getting a little haphazard and I didn't have a good sense of exactly what I wanted to be tracking so I stopped after a while. But now I find myself wanting to be able to do things like find "all entries that mention the romance Yde and Olive" or "all entries that mention women kissing" or "all entries relevant to the 16th century" or the like. It also seems like a good time to lay out the broad themes of what sort of material I'm covering or searching for and how that relates to the underlying purpose of the project. It'll take a bit of back-tracking, but this sort of data organization is fun for me.

Slide Show!

I was inspired to propose a visual/textual survey of the material in the project (highlights only!) as a presentation for one of the conferences on my schedule this year. They weren't interested in it, but it still seems like something fun and useful to add to my repertoire of presentations. In case people aren't aware, I love teaching, lecturing, discussing, geeking out and so forth about the things I'm researching. If you're ever interested in having me show up and do so for some event, just ask. There isn't a lot of visual art that either clearly illustrates the topics in the LHMP or independently represents female homoeroticism or romance. But there's certainly enough to put together a one-hour narrated slide show.

So look forward to more exciting LHMP activity in the future! Oh…and buy my new book! Release date is April 20.
