IIRC, relics of Mary's girdle were especially sought after for easing childbirth. She is supposed to have dropped it down from Heaven to a particular saint which I'm too lazy to go look up at the moment (Thomas?).
Symbolism is abundant here, considering that it was customary in some cultures to loosen ties, open doors and windows, and un-knot everything knotted in order to ease a birth.
