(No, I haven't forgotten that I still owe the last half of the Yellowstone trip.)

There are many things one does not want to see on one's computer screen. A close conjunction of the words "kernel" and "panic" are one of them. This is the iMac -- it did some weird hang-up back ... hmm, several weeks ago when I didn't have time to deal with it ... and I just shut it down at the time. Just got around to troubleshooting this evening and have been getting an assortment of "invalid memory access" messages, concluding with "Panic: We are hanging here …" And that's while I'm booting off the "hardware test" CD. A pity it's well out of extended AppleCare. The last time I had to deal with a kernel panic, they ended up replacing assorted innards. On the up side, it's thoroughly backed up via TimeMachine. On the down side, I'm not sure I can access the backup of the desktop machine via the laptop (time to consult the manual) so the file I'm looking for that sparked the troubleshooting session may not be accessible soon.

I'm also having DSL issues again, similar to the phone line problem I had a couple months ago, except that currently I seem to be able to establish a connection by means of phoning myself and then hanging up when the 'net connection goes through. The connection then lasts anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days before failing again. In the mean time, it tends to be very slow. This combination of characteristics means that it would be almost impossible to convince anyone to come service the lines, since it's mostly "working".

Still and all, they're annoyances, not roadblocks, at the moment.
