One thing I'm reminded of is how masculine clothing appropriated into female wardrobes in late 1600s English fashion was derided by contemporaries -- specifically doublet bodices & tall crowned hats. 'Women trying to look like men' the critics wrote. The book Dressing the Elite talks about this. And then at the same time, Shakespeare is using women dressing as men as plot device in all his romances. Hmm...
