Doing readers a service

I think honest, critical reviews serve both readers and the genre better than a misguided "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" policy. Readers benefit not just from knowing whether to bother with a particular novel, but also from a genre landscape where there are such reviews. The complimentary or quiet approach does nothing to encourage more readers to take the genre seriously, or, for that matter, read the genre at all.
