You have explained all my reservations about using social media for promotion much more clearly than I could.
I've tried Twitter several times and found it to be a total time-sink. I have finally got Facebook tamed, but only by refusing to add anyone I don't know personally and/or have known for many years online. Also, despite having had friends requests from moderately well known names, I only add people who know actually know who I am. Otherwise the stream is just too much to read daily and I miss stuff that actual friends have posted.
