Dropbox synchronizes with an offline folder on your computer. I actually feel rather good about it and plan to pay actual money for more storage. I don't trust iCloud at all, but it's the efficient way to sync all the weird little Apple utilities. I have become a Scrivener convert, although I wish it had a way to keep reference/character pages that link to multiple publication files. (And I'm very much looking forward to the iOS version.) All my writing projects are Scrivener syncing through Dropbox these days. And, as noted on the above comment, I decided to throw money at the backup drive issue, and will try to remember to do regular offsite backups. (In a weird way, my laptop is my "offsite backup" because it usually travels with me, whereas the Time Capsule backup lives at home.)

MS Office falls in the "simply my life" category, however. I use Office products every minute of my working day (at the Day Job) and it simply isn't worth the aggravation to use two different suites for writing/spreadsheet/presentation.
