They aren't the same species as European black currants. Evidently there's a history of restriction in the US due to cross-infection with a white pine fungal disease. The ban was lifted quite some time ago, but evidently nurseries generally don't carry Ribes niger -- the variety I'm getting is Ribes odoratum. On the other hand, the European red current (Ribes ruber) *is* the available variant (and what I'm getting) so I'm not sure why the difference.
If they follow the same pattern as the blueberries, in the first year, I'll just munch on them while doing yard maintenance. But I'm hoping for a much bigger blueberry crop this (second) year and we'll see. One useful thing about growing all sorts of varieties is that I can always combine them to make up the numbers.
