It takes a bit for a morning to recover from being woken up at 5am by explosions and flashes of light several blocks over. But you just might think that when you call 911 to report said explosions and flashes of light, the dispatcher might have the courtesy (and knowledge) to say, "Don't worry, it's police action -- we already know about it" rather than saying, "We'll send a car out to look into it." Because in the latter case, one tends to lie awake for the next hour wondering what's going on and why there aren't any sirens and so forth. And then when one finally gets back to sleep, one tends to oversleep and have strange dreams about kittens jumping out of their skins (literally). For full details, plug the phrase "Your Black Muslim Bakery" into your favorite on-line news search engine and keep in mind that they're located two blocks from my house.

I heard about that raid on the news this morning. What a terrifying way to wake up.

I don't think the operators are allowed to mention that there's a police operation going on, but it sure would have been nice of that operator to say that the police in your area were already looking into it.

Good Lord!!! Not fun. I was woken up by a police action once. But that was at 11:00 pm. I never did go back to sleep that night.

Wow! I knew Chauncey Bailey moderately well and hadn't heard about his assassination until this article. YBMB had an affiliated Muslim school that was rated one of the best in the country a few years back - do you know how that's faired since Dr. Bey's death and these raids?

The school is still there -- I have no idea what sort of educational quality it has. But some of the scuttlebutt about the bakery involves possible embezzlement and bankruptcy, in which case I have to assume that the school would be affected.

Two blocks from you? That is uncomfortably close. I'd heard from Urtatim, who lives close by as well, that the bakery was a bad place.

I think I've told this story already, but I awoke one night at about 1AM to hear (as it turned out) the police kicking the door in of the house in back of me. I did call 911, and IIRC they actually did tell me that the police were already on the scene at that point. I think I figured out later that it was a drug raid -- the tenants were probably growing marijuana in their back bedroom (where I'd seen a bluish light on at odd hours).

Of course, one of my co-workers amended that, when he heard the story, commenting, "...or maybe they have a computer."...

"Oakland police believe members of the Your Black Muslim Bakery were involved in 'cleansing' the area surrounding its business of undesirables, possibly including two men shot and killed last month."

Wow. That's super scary. Especially not knowing how they would define "undesireables."
