... to give stuff away. I've become very fond of the Freecycle concept for getting rid of stuff that's too good for the trash can but not good enough to be worth trying to sell. But sometimes the logistics get rather annoying. Sunday I listed a batch of assorted stuff and pretty much had it all spoken for within an hour after putting the notice out on the Freecycle mailing list. So why is it that Wednesday will arrive with only one of the eight spoken-for items actually having been taken off my hands? And in the mean time I'm sending nice polite apologies to all sorts of folks who didn't happen to be the first in line, while the first-in-lines are failing to get their act together as far as removing a box or bag from my porch at their own convenience. Grrr.

That said, I have a few items that I'd like to get rid of that I'd prefer to offer around the local SCA crowd first. To wit:

Camp cot, folding -- practically new. I bought this when I was in between rope-matress beds and wanted something to sleep on. Alas, it isn't kind to my back, so it isn't worth keeping as a back-up camp bed. Packs down to 3 ft by ca. 6 inches.

Propane stove (Coleman brand) -- old and grody but perfectly functional. This was my first camping stove, received as a graduation present in '80. It's seen long, hard use and is somewhat encrusted with baked-on crud, along with a little rust. But it has two burners that work perfectly well. Takes standard propane cyllinders.

Collection of ceramic jars -- For years I bought only Pommery brand mustard in order to collect the ceramic jars it came in to use for SCA camp-kitchen supplies. Now that I have a collection of over a dozen of them (in two sizes) I've revised my philosophy of camp kitchens to something that doesn't really need this sort of storage container. But they're too gorgeous just to throw out -- off-white finish stoneware cyllindrical jars with a lip on the opening so you could tie a cover over it. Surely someone can give them a good home?

Plastic dish tubs -- two stackable rubbermaid-type dish tubs. Great for camp dishwashing. Nothing special, but there you are.

Contact me if you're interested -- I'll probably be offering them on SCA-West if they don't get snapped up here.

OK -- no particular rush as long as I know it's spoken for.

We've used Freecycle here in the Antipodes too. There's nothing wrong with putting reasonable conditions on things: "Free to a good home: one padget-burler's clontarf, with flanges and sundry woggles in excellent condition. Collect from my place between 4pm and 8pm today only, no exceptions." Then when someone fails to show up on time, readvertise immediately and either do or don't give preference to the original "buyer", as you like.

Speaking of Freecycle, we should get to and dispose of some of our mountains of stuff too...

Yeah, I should probably get in the habit of telling people "and if you haven't picked it up in X days, it goes to the next person on the list." Part of the problem is that they aren't always items that I want to leave sitting out on the porch for anyone to take ... because I don't care to get neighborhood hangers-out in the habit of thinking that it's ok to walk off with anything in my yard that isn't nailed down. (Well, ok, some of them already think that. But I don't want to encourage it. It's sort of like not leaving food garbage where the possums can trip over it.) And conversely I don't want to advertise to complete strangers what times I am and am not at home. It's a dilemma.

I'll take some of the ceramic jars off your hands. I could use about 8-10 of them.

Ok, that's more or less the number I have, so I'll just put you down for the lot. When are we likely to bump into each other in person next?

The next event that we may both be at is probably Mist Bardic, Sept 8. I'll be in the kitchen.
