I've been resisting participating in LiveJournal for a long time. It seemed likely to be a time-sink. I had a vague impression that people got sucked into LJ and disappeared. I had a couple of bad experiences with seeing people develop a sort of tunnel vision and stop interacting with people who weren't on LJ.

But I come from a long line of diarists. And I've been starting to feel a desire for some way of keeping connected with family, friends, and acquaintances in a more regular and more broadcast manner. Something more casual than individual communication but more personal and immediate than my web site. One of the clinchers came earlier this year when my mother had a cancer scare and I found myself desperately wanting a way to shout, "AAARRRRRRGHHHH!" to the world in general without the individual intrusiveness of e-mailing or phoning specific people.

So here I am.

Hi world!

Welcome to this weird and interesting place. I think that like anything, LJ is only a time-sink if you let it be. It is a good way to keep in touch, though.

It is a tremendous time sink, as well as an opportunity to tell the world what you had for dinner last night and whether or not you are a fairy princess. Not being much of a diarist, I find it mostly useful for tracking projects, sounding out ideas and keeping in touch with people, given that face to face communication isn't my best skill. And occasionally whining and letting people know whether or not I am a fairy princess.

I find the LJ-experiance to be interesting. Lets me keep in touch with a variety of people, and I learn about people I like but don't know very well. I've also noted a trend among My People that we all assume everyone knows what's going on because "I posted it on my LJ".

Hello, welcome!

Time sink? Potentially.
Good way to AARGH when necessary, as well as keep some track of those who are distant? definitely.
Way to find out if you are a fairy princess, super hero, or villian of the week? Only if you let it :)

I got sucked in just a week ago. It can be seductive, but you seem too balanced to get too lost in it. And you nailed one of its best aspects - letting your friends in on your life on their schedule instead of yours.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I hadn't heard about your mother. Is she okay now?

We so seldom see people that this is a great way to keep in touch with folks.

I'm so happy that you finally succumbed - welcome!!!!!!!

I like to know what is going on in people's heads, as well as in their lives in general. I also like LJ because it's yet another way to goof off with my friends.

time sinque? Hah!

I keep forgetting to post to LJ... then i write something way too long.

Good to keep up, since we're only about 3 blocks from one another.
