Last night it occurred to me that if I were flying somewhere and I'd left packing until the evening before, I'd be having anxiety dreams up one side and down the other, but road trips don't push the same buttons. But at least I'm packed now. Clothes, check. Bicycling, hiking, and swimming clothes, check. Bicycle and bicycle paraphernalia, check. Scroll to be signed, pen and ink, check. Snacks for road, check. Laptop and iPod ... well, I'm still typing on the computer, so no -- but I haven't forgotten, and I must remember to get the iPod out of the charger in the morning. Itinerary, schedule, and Mapquest printouts of everyone's locations, check. Loaded all relevant phone numbers into cell phone, check. Cash from atm, check. Called painter and reminded him that I'll be out of town and that he's free to show up and finish the work but I won't be able to pay him off until I get back, check. Oops, must e-mail him the list of minor touch-ups I came up with. Ok, check. All systems go. At one point I was thinking, hey, if I'm all ready to go, maybe I'll just hit the road tonight, but I haven't gotten enough sleep the last couple nights, and it was never a particularly good idea in the first place. So crack of dawn it is.

I even turned in the two reports for work that I wanted to finish before leaving. They're not quite finalized, but I left annotations of the items to be confirmed and what documents needed to be attached. (And, if it comes down to it, they aren't due until a couple days after I get back, so if something really needs my personal attention, it can wait.) I really hate it when I get surprised by new information on the day I thought I was finalizing a report. In this case it was "good" new information (i.e., it made the situation look a bit more understandable), but it was still new.

I heard from the final person on my visiting list and we have tentative plans, but still haven't heard back from the guy I want to get a scroll signature from. Well, there's always the phone book. At the last moment, it also occurred to me to toss in one of the extra volumes of collected works that I printed as thank-you/commemoration presents for my 25th Laurel anniversary to give him as a "see what I've been doing since you Laurelled me" present.

Have a wonderful trip, and may the weather be both varied and nice, and the roads safe.
