Have I whined recently about how deeply dissatisfied I am with my wardrobe? I'm poking through it looking for the specified "festive attire" to wear to a party tonight. I like making fitted, tailored clothes. All my really nice stuff is precisely fitted. And it all fits someone who weighs 50-60 pounds more than I do. Wah! And the rest is boring. Or stuff I just don't like any more. Wah! Whine! And there's no way I'm going to spend a bunch of money or sewing time to do anything about it yet. (I'm even re-thnking whether I want to make something new for 12th night.) Whine! Scowl!

Speaking of 12th Night, I have a friend in Sacramento who's going to 12th Night; she was wondering how "formal" it was -- what manner of dress would be all right for someone who hasn't been to an event in quite some time. I figured it couldn't hurt to ask you, even if your answer is "don't know".

It's all over the map. The people who like dressing up, use it as the excuse to go all out. (Keep in mind that, of our six crown/coronation events every year, it's the only one that isn't a campout.) The people who aren't so much into clothes just wear what they usually wear. People who are brand new wear whatever it is they have. I do hope she'll be attending in company with some people she already knows because the event is notoriously ill-suited for breaking the ice and meeting new people. (In addition to the simple problem that everyone is rushing around madly all day, there are a fair number of people for whom 12th night is the only event they normally attend -- or who pick it for their "visit friends in the West" event -- so if nobody recognizes you, they don't assume that you're new and need welcoming, they assume you're some old-timer coming out of the woodwork for 12th night to visit old friends.)

As someone who currently owns only one acceptable modern skirt for wear in the winter, and who wore it today and will be wearing it again tomorrow, I sympathize. (I'm a docent for Giles' and Giuseppe's Edwardian house on the French Park Holiday Home Tour. I'm also wearing my one acceptable lightweight red sweater both days. Nobody will notice except the hosts.)
