I was expecting to run into snow delays in Boston. I was quite prepared to find that my flight from LA to Boston had snow issues. But I hadn't quite expected my itinerarius interruptus to get only as far as the Oakland Airport Hilton. It seems the plane that was supposed to be the Oakland-to-LA leg had mechanical problems in LA and never left the ground to come up here. Given that I'm now leaving Oakland at 5-mumble in the morning, the free airport hotel room makes life a lot simpler than having to go home and back again.

Ugh. May the travel tomorrow be much better!

Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year: three holidays in the middle of winter, when travel is simultaneously unpleasant and improbable. The USA has obviously got this all wrong. Maybe if the whole country could convert from knee-jerk Christianity to knee-jerk Islam or Judaism, you could negotiate a more convenient set of holidays.

Or come to Australia, where salad and pavlova is the order of the day for Christmas, and provided you can avoid the bushfires you can go wherever you like.

It's the near inevitable result of an agrarian society in a highly seasonal climate... the biggest holidays occur when there's a minimum amount of work to be done in the fields.

Ah, that would be it. Whereas Australia has imported its traditions from the Northern hemisphere, and in fact has no public holidays between early June and early October as a consequence.

We need to have a new holiday in mid-January, though: Exploding Trees Day. It'd be a big hit!

::dopeslaps self:: Hi Fruitbat! I should've figured I'd find you here... I've been singing "And The Bass Sings Low And Profoundly" for a dozen years since you posted it to Usenet.

**snrk!** Oh yes, that'd be good.

Here's hoping the rest of your trip is safe and comfortable all the way and on time too!
