What were the first clues? Well, the mouse droppings on the windowsill above the sink were pretty conclusive. (As a former lab animal colony worker, I know from mouse droppings.) And it also explained the little nibble-marks in two of the tomatoes in the fruit bowl (which I though had been handling damage to over-ripe spots). But the hole in my bag of bird seed and the scattered sunflower shells are pretty strong evidence as well. Oh, and the skittering sound behind the tool cabinet when I was packing the bird seed into a mouse-proof container was suspicious.

Clearly my cat is allowing her reputation to be besmirched.

We've had a couple of mousey squatters in our house. At one point we watched one of them saunter across the middle of the kitchen floor, in broad daylight, stop and look up at the 70-pound greyhound dozing three feet away, then go on with its business. Said greyhound was definitely not doing its job....

When I was backpacking on the Appalachian Trail, the more seasoned hikers told me never to zip my pack pockets closed at night, because the mice would get in anyway, and better they be able to do so without destroying my pack. One night a mouse nibbled the edge of that day's diary entry, then defecated on it... everyone's a critic....

I have heard that the skin a snake sheds, left in places which are attractive to mice, like behind the stove convinces mice that they'd rather live elsewhere. Alas, I've not had a chance to try this--it isn't legal to keep snakes as pets in Tasmania, so the only way to obtain shedded snake skin would be to find it in the wild, which I haven't done. Fortunately, the mice don't seem to have bothered with coming inside recently--we keep all food well sealed, so there isn't anything tempting them.
