Vain Attempts at Shopping
Oct. 12th, 2008 07:15 pmI keep valiantly struggling against the fashion for shopping on the internet by preference. I consider it important to support local bricks-and-mortar businesses as a first preference. Days like today make me wonder about why I bother. All I wanted was to replenish my supply of filters for my bagless vacuum and to track down some new drip pans for the stove burners. Four general hardware stores, of varying extensiveness, failed to have anything even close. Even the store where I bought the vacuum has discontinued carrying the replacement filters. So after four hours of driving around to various stores, I gave up and spent half an hour on-line ordering them from the relevant factories. (That is, both the filters and the drip pans.)
Relevant to this, the weekend's primary accomplishment has been catching up on the housecleaning.
On the up side, while running around, I dropped in to Macy's to look for something (that they didn't have) and got stopped in my tracks by a big poster on the history of the company (they're celebrating their 150th anniversary) which prominently featured a photo and mention of my great-great-grandmother Margaret Getchell (an early executive at the store). It was so cool I just had to buttonhole a passing sales clerk and squee at her.
