Treo annoyance

Today's entry: totally crime-free!
I don't know what it is about Palm/Treo connection hardware, but it seems like I end up replacing the connection cord twice as often as the devices themselves. (On previous occasions I've known for certain that it was the connection hardware because I could get an intermittent connection by manipulating the wire.) My Treo is refusing to sync: "can't complete connection". Since my last successful synchronization was well after I upgraded to Leopard, it isn't an operating system conflict. The connection cables are cheap enough that I don't mind just trying a new one, but I'd hate to be right that it's just shoddy hardware again.
I've tried setting it up to synchronize via Bluetooth but I've never been successful using that mode. The Treo seems to think it doesn't have the capability (although I have gotten the Bluetooth to work for handsfree mode with the GPS). I found a web page with detailed instructions on how to get a Treo 650 to Bluetooth-sync with a Mac even when it gives the error message I'm getting ("port is in use by another application") but nothing changed after I followed their instructions to the letter. Annoying, very annoying. (Don't anyone bother suggesting trying Palm Support -- the last time I had to do that was the most frustratingly non-productive travesty of "support" I've ever been subjected to.)
I love my Treo -- don't get me wrong. But I need it to talk to the desktop.
