Well the answer on the lack of phone signal appears to have been some sort of software glitch in the phone. As my second round of troubleshooting (Round #1 being "ignore it for a day and see if the problem goes away") I restored factory settings to the iPhone and then reloaded the programs and files (which is, fortunately, trivially easy). So, in the jargon of my job, I may not have Root Cause, but I've achieved Corrective Action.

(For those following along on the Geek-off challenge, my co-worker countered my "thanked for my research in the preface to a fantasy novel" with "had a game module that he developed incorporated by the game creator into a commercial video game". Nicely parallel -- I had physical evidence, but will admit that it would have been impossible for him to provide direct evidence in the office. We didn't get a clear judgement from the review board, although I think I had the edge. I have an idea for tomorrow but will need to climb up into the attic to retrieve it, so it's good that I have several backups.)

Is this the sign of a geek????
Heather's grandfather and all three brothers have carried the trait for red-green color-blindness. (Yes, I'm the carrier.) It is manifested mostly in a problem with distinguishing between shades of brown/tan and shades of green. My father was very glad when they universally put red lights on top.
When Heather was three or four she would argue with her older brother about what color something was. Finally, she declared,"I know you think it's that color and I know what color it really is, but I'm not going to argue with you any more." Heather's Mom
