I wish I could figure out what underlies my self-destructive impulse to stay up way past my bed-time ... especially since I'm not doing anything actually productive and useful, but just web-surfing and playing meaningless computer games (or constructing new exercise play-lists). I did it again last night, still managed to drag myself off to the gym before work, and then on top of the sleep-hangover had cramps all day and the leading edge of a splitting headache. The last several weeks I've been sticking fairly strictly to "meat main dishes on weekends only", but tonight I went for the comfort food. Hunk of flesh. Strawberries & melted brie. (Yes, yes, and two generous servings of vegetables. This isn't a complete crash-and-burn night.) One way to avoid the up-lates is not to descend to the living room at all in the evening (which is my plan tonight). Another useful trick is to run the laptop off battery power only and go to bed when it threatens to shut off. But I'd like to think that force of will could also be a useful way of managing my life.

It's not safe to rely on will power. Managing your environment works much better.

Strawberries & melted brie.

Really? That isn't a combination that would have occured to me. Maybe I'll try it come strawberry season....

. . . Maybe your brain is just trying to tell you that it has exhausted its productivity quotient and enjoys the warm fuzzy instant feedback of the internet? Can you distract it with literature?
