Coronet was a pleasant opener for my camping season. Still a bit cold at night, but ok once I was snuggled beneath the covers. Warm, but not too hot in the afternoon. A bit too windy while packing up this morning. I've re-instituted my "random spontaneous dinner guest" program with a not entirely spontaneous and not particularly random entry. A week ago the head of court for the P&P of the Mists put out a request for volunteers to feed them at the event. Although the request said, "doesn't need to be fancy or period or anything" I was assured that it would be ok if I wanted to do something in that line. So working with the constraint that there was no telling exactly when they'd be sitting down to dinner (after some combination of a chivalry meeting, court, an the usual random periods of standing around for half an hour for no obvious reason waiting for something to happen) I came up with a first course that could be held ready for serving indefinitely and served at a moment's notice (a hot broth of chickens and cold Ember Day tarts), a second course that could be prepared in the time they were eating the first one (grilled steaks with a ginger-pepper sauce, frumenty prepared ahead and heated in a boiling bag), and a third course involving no cooking at all (wafers, cold pear compote from last weekend's cooking day, and fresh strawberries). Vyncent volunteered at the last minute to help serve, which helped things move smoothly (and I think he had a lot of fun at it). We continue the plot to infiltrate ordinary SCA dinners with historic dining techniques.

Oh, and the nice young fellow fighting for [livejournal.com profile] duchessletitia won the tourney. I think this is going to be a fun reign. (I think there were five seconds between me congratulating her and finding myself agreeing to be on her court.)

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Roric and I both loved every bite - I am becoming more and more thoroughly convinced that Period Food Is Tasty! :)

I bet Princess Syele had no idea I was on your friends list, and how long I have admired your dedication to authenticity. Huzzah for historic dining techniques! I hope some day to have the time and financial resources to emulate (or at least benefit from) your research.
