Reconciling my charge card statement today and puzzling over a $67 charge from "Holtzbrinck Publishers" in Gordonsville VA on July 7th. Taking a look at the various imprints in the Holtzbrinck publishing group, it's quite reasonable that I bought a book from one of them. It's quite reasonable that I may have pre-ordered a book from one of their imprints back in May at Kalamazoo and that it's only now in print and being charged to me. Problem is, if they charged me for it a month ago, how come I haven't received a book in the intervening month? There is one book I remember pre-ordering from David Brown at Kalamazoo, but the amount is wrong and the publisher isn't in the Holtzbrinck group. I did buy a book from one of the Holtzbrink imprints (Palgrave) at Kalamazoo for an amount only $0.50 different from the charged amount, but I thought that charge went through last month -- there was a "Paypal" charge for the right amount in the right timeframe. I assumed that for some reason the book vendor at the conference was running charges through a Paypal account. (I don't have a Paypal account myself, so it wouldn't be anything I was buying directly.) I suppose I could be being scammed, and I'll check things out through the credit card carrier. But a more reasonable explanation is that I bought some book that I've forgotten about (and have not yet received).

I am confuzzled.

ETA: Some of the confuzzlement is stripped away. It was the "paypal" charge last month that was $0.50 off from the book price. So the Holtzbrinck charge is exactly what I would have expected for the book I bought from Palgrave and is almost certainly the correct charge for that item. (I received the book at the conference, so there's no issue of "why haven't I received a book?") So I'm left with last month's $67.50 charge through "paypal" that I hadn't questioned at the time (thinking it was the Palgrave charge, maybe with a $0.50 processing surcharge?) that has no explanation.
