Best way to distract an SCA mailing list from an endless nattering thread about whether some stupid drunken party trick is or is not hazing? Lob a post about the non-member surcharge into the middle of it. Yeah, that'll calm everything down. You betcha.

I secretly suspect world-wide PMS.

There might be something in that. I've been commenting on a general discombobulation front at work during the last couple of weeks. (It took me a while to notice because my discombobulation is directly attributable to family issues. .... Or is it?)

Yeah, I wondered about that... :->

How goes the hazing argument? I heard about this whole business from a fellow Easterner who couldn't stop herself from posting.

The hazing issue was well into fizzling out before the regrettably poorly-worded and poorly-timed Eastern message stirred the coals. There wasn't any resolution - the people who say it's all just good fun say they're doing it responsibly, and the people who say it's hazing are convinced that not everyone is using adequate restraint regarding who, when, and how - but there was never going to be any resolution in the first place. It didn't help that people seemed slow to catch on that there were at least two separate recent incidents, with very different details.

Maybe a loud, cabbage-fueled fart in a packed elevator would be more calming.

and if that doesn't work we can bring up a fourth peerage, or protected regalia. :-)

The non-member surcharge is totally hazing! ;)

I read the first few posts on the topic, and I even read your post defining hazing out loud to [livejournal.com profile] clovis_t (I particularly like the part about the entire PhD process counting as hazing), but then it just went on, I got busy, and I started deleting everything, and didn't even look at the non-member surcharge posts...

Er ... your post sounds a bit too much like "Gee, I guess I must have been wearing provocative clothing." Don't take quite so much credit for other people's idiocy. :)

Heh, I haven't been actively involved in the SCA for over a decade, and I can just nod in understanding at this one ....

Are you a Carolingian, or former Carolingian? We must've met at some point.

Sort of 'yes'? I was an active Felding when I was in college (95-7), until I went mad, they threw me out, and I was rather focused on subsistence living for a while. I am still in the area, broadly speaking, and have been making "I must get active again" noises for the last few years.

I don't need to make peripheral references to folks 'cos I see you have them on your flist - I was [livejournal.com profile] keshwyn's roommate before the aforementioned madness. Still in regular contact with that generation of Felding, at least those still in the area.

Of course, right now I have a three month old daughter, which somewhat slows down the process of things like garb development. I know what I want to do for persona when I get my act together and all - I wasn't really persona-enabled in college, I was just experimenting - so it's primarily a case of establishing tuits.
