It is the day of the West Kingdom Heralds Collegium. It is the day of the Big Game. (Which "big game". Bah! There is only one.) Brother #3 came up from Ben Lomond for the first and given that he's staying over for tomorrow's heralds meeting, we have Cal vs. Stanford on the TV. (Not merely a Cal alumnus but a former marching band member.) I make no predictions lest I jinx anything, but we shall have a brief moment of "Go Bears!!!" here in this journal.

Mind you, football in and of itself is pretty meaningless to me, but it is part of The Ways of My People. My standard (true) joke is that the last time I attended a football game in person was Cal vs. UCLA when both younger brothers were playing ... brother #2 played trumpet for UCLA and brother #3 played Euphonium for Cal. I went home after the halftime show.

I missed out on so many "traditional" college things by virtue of where I went to school. UC Santa Cruz has no football, no grades, and a very small frat presence. Well, they have grades now. My year was the last year to have optional grades.

My college was Division III, so our athletic teams played such SoCal heavyweights as the Whittier Poets.

This did nothing to produce athletic loyalty.

I feel fortunate to have been in college during the years when they were discarding some of the Traditional College Things -- I got to experience them once or twice, but was thankful when the more dorky ones went away. My freshman year was the last time they did a "rush" thing, where the classes did floats and paraded down to the local movie theater for a free show. I sincerely *hope* it was also the last year they did "icebreakers" during freshman orientation like having a relay "race" where pairs of boys and girls had to put an old tire over their heads and wiggle through it together. (I saw what that was about and stepped out of line. The GOOD thing about this school is that no one gave you any grief for opting out on things like this, or tried to tease you into being a "good sport".) I think my frosh year was also the last year that girls had to sign out when they left the dorm after dark (boys, of course, didn't ...). By my senior year there were co-ed dorms. Times do change....

P.S. Football

I don't think I've ever been to a football game. One of the things we were very proud of at the college I went to is that the soccer games drew crowds at least as big as the football games. (Well, so I'm told -- never went to one of those either.) Speaking of the Whittier Poets and their ilk, our team was the Fighting Quakers, which we rather enjoyed.

GO BEARS!!!

Give me the Axe the Axe the Axe!!!!!!!

Bears rock! Especially Oscar.
My favorite memory was the Cal/USC game. I lived at I House and my room/window was as the front of the house. The bands marched up Bancroft and turned north to go up Piedmont to the Stadium - playing the whole time. Very thrilling. I'd say it was more thrilling than the games, not being a football fan, but we had a GOOD team and especially fine quarterback at the time (yes I'm dating myself).

This means you understand the real purpose for team sports: to provide a venue for the band.
