Made it to this weekend's pottery painting party for the Perfectly Period Feast. There was an unfortunate firing failure (half the intended painting subjects came out cracked) so we pretty much only had one piece each to work on. That meant I decided to pick one of the more intricate originals to copy. The colors will be darker after firing, of course.

The original (14th c. Spanish):

Cool!

How did you happen to decide to use purple (instead of the original brown)?

Crystal here, while the scan does look brown it's purpleish brown (or purpleish black) in the originals. All the pottery we're doing is based on designs from Teruel, Spain. The bright green and dark purple is very typical of the surviving pieces. As an alternate example, there's a plate with a long-necked bird on it near the top of this page:

OK. Everything I'd read about Archaic Majolica said that the only two pigments used were copper green and manganese brown. I guess everything really *is* different in Iberia :-)

It's possible the manganese brown looks purply due to kilning conditions. I don't know as much about it as I'd like, but the Spanish stuff really does look purple/brown or purple/black to me.

And the short version from my point of view: it was the color we had available at the workshop.

I have one piece (much simpler) that I did like this ages ago & I've always meant to go back & do more. So so pretty!

How clever of you to bring a camera. I never thought of that at the last pot party. It's fun, isn't it?

*heh* I didn't bring a camera -- I brought a phone.

Makes me want an iphone even more. My replacement phone does not take pictures.
