Is it Friday yet?
Jun. 9th, 2006 10:33 pmTook the old kitchen table off to Goodwill after work today. You might think they'd be more ... well, not so much more enthusiastic about donations, but less off-putting. The reaction was pretty much, "Oh, I suppose you could put it in the back corner in the furniture section if you like." Um, aren't you even going to give it a brief once-over and attach a price sticker? Well, it's easier than other ways of getting rid of it, I suppose.
Finished a rather interesting investigation at work today, although it ended up being less conclusive than I would have liked. It was the sort of thing where, during the first week or so I found myself thinking, "Gee, wouldn't it be nice to get into the lab and try to reproduce the effect so I can test a few theories ... but they'd never approve it," only to find that the manufacturing sciences support folks were already doing the experiments I was fantasizing about doing. (Well, not fantasizing about me doing them, although it might be fun to get back in the lab some time, but fantasizing about having someone do them.) But in the end they could only sort-of reproduce something similar-but-not-identical to the thing I was investigating, and I had to pile on the circumstantial evidence to come up with a reasonable cause scenario. Yeah, I'm being too vague to be interesting. Next week our department gets our summer college intern. I swear that it's purely coincidental that the candidate we selected happens to be the one who mentioned in her interview that she was working on a paper on Ogham inscriptions with my favorite Medieval Welsh professor at Cal. (Yes, this is a peculiar subject to have come up in an interview for a pharmaceutical company. I think we got there via, "Tell us about a time when you had to pull together evidence from a lot of different sources to support an analysis.") Purely coincidental. Really.
So I promise I'll do something fun and creative and not related to working on the house for at least part of this weekend. Any requests? But I'll also see if I can get the flooring job lined up, and need to get the lawn mowed, and should start the Library Triage and Sifting with the cookbooks that are taking up space in boxes on the kitchen floor. Ack. The thought of GETTING RID OF BOOKS. Scary. But it's time. There was a time when I collected all sorts of cookbooks, but when it comes down to it, other than the historic ones (which are Not To Be Touched) there are only a small handful that I use. Joy of Cooking tops the list, which is why I have two copies. I also have a few philosophical maunderings that I've been meaning to post for some time that I should try to work on.
