2012 in Review
Dec. 31st, 2012 08:15 pmLet's try the "first line of the first post of each month" thing with a little summary overview thrown in.
January: total of 4 entries, primarily covering writing and yard projects
1st sentence (ok, 2, because it needed context): "It's been a year, as of today. I have ceremonially discarded all the tampons I had stashed in random locations around my life."
February: total of 1 entry
1st sentence: "Between schedules and priorities and whatnot, this is the first of the several annual West Coast Culinary Symposia that I've attended."
March: total of 8 entries, writing, gardening, dating, medical issues
1st sentence: "Wow, have I really not posted anything since the Culinary Symposium?" (Remainder of the post is about novel revisions.)
April: total of 6 entries, mostly writing
1st sentence: "Saturday scotica began leading me through the adventures of converting my web site to Drupal." (Note that I've done practically no further progress on the project since this post.)
May: total of 21 entries, lots of Kalamazoo posts
1st sentence: "Being the person I am, I sometimes (often?) consider the question of why my patterns of social interaction manifest in the way they do."
June: total of 7 entries, food and cooking technology, a couple of memes, writing
1st sentence: (skipping the cut tag) "Herewith is my stream-of-consciousness progress in devising a turning spit for my medieval camping fire-box."
July: total of 5 entries, cooking, fruit processing, writing, and starting dragon boat paddling
1st sentence: "I sent the following off to Splash ID tech support even though my last crazy, ridiculous stab in the dark seems to have solved my problem."
August: total of 2 entries, all about writing
1st sentence: (skipping the apology for not posting in so long) "As of about an hour ago, I've finished all the edits of Daughter of Mystery that fall under the rubric of "Rev 2"."
September: total of 5 entries, writing, dating, turning of the seasons
1st sentence: (Poll question) "So if, as one small part of a description/synopsis of Daughter of Mystery I wrote, "Think of it as the love-child of Georgette Heyer and Alexandre Dumas, midwifed by Sarah Waters," would you consider this:"
October: total of 3 entries, all about writing -- including e-mailing the manuscript out for consideration
1st sentence: (skipping the apologetic first sentence) "But this morning I took all the accumulated feedback on Daughter of Mystery from my second batch of test readers and integrated it into the manuscript."
November: total of 6 entries, literary sex, my trip to NY and Darkovercon, and announcement of having sold my novel
1st sentence: "I've been getting home well after dark a lot lately, so today it came as a bit of a surprise when I stepped into the back yard to water the potted trees and discovered a carpet of green where there had been only dry dirt."
December: total of 6 entries, cooking, writing, and family holidays
1st sentence: "Having finally created a combined file out of all the chapter-specific files, I find that Book 2 (i.e., The Mystic Marriage) is now around 29,000 words with 10 of the currently-outlined 33 chapters drafted."
In summary, the biggest thing going on in my life this year was taking Daughter of Mystery from completed first draft to acceptance by a publisher.
