Over on Twitter, @adotnon was looking for examples of short historic fiction. All I could think of off the top of my head that fit the category were several anthologies of short historic mysteries. And, as it turns out, the majority of them are Mike Ashley collections (big surprise):

Edited by Mike Ashley:
Classical Whodunnits
Historical Whodunnits
The Mammoth Book of Historical Detectives
The Mammoth Book of More Historical Whodunnits
The Mammoth Book of New Historical Whodunnits
The Mammoth Book of Roman Whodunnits
Shakespearean Whodunits

Non-Ashley collections include:

Edited by Miriam Grace Monfredo
Crime Through Time
Crime Through Time II
Crime Through Time III

Past Poisons: An Ellis Peters Memorial Anthology of Historic Crime (ed. by Maxim Jakubowski)
Much Ado About Murder (ed. by Anne Perry)

I'm fairly certain I've also seen anthologies (or at least 2-3 story collections) of historic romance. There may well be anthologies of just plain short historic fiction without other cross-genre elements but I'd be less likely to notice them.

Historical Romance

There are lots and lots of short story collections of "Regency" (loosely defined) historical romance (3-5 stories per book, usually be different authors but occasionally be a single author). There is usually at least one (often more) published every Christmas and Valentine's Day, and at least periodically for Easter, Mother's Day, probably other holidays I've forgotten, as well as ones with non-holiday themes (a whole series with a kitten theme, another with a magic theme, and all sorts of random excuses for a one off book :-) If I recall correctly, I think there is even at least one collection of short stories by Georgette Heyer!

Although I don't think there is quite the same volume, I have also seen historical romance short story collections with Western settings, Victorian, and multiple-time period (one per story, not time travel -- though there are also ones with time travel!)

[Why, yes, I do have boxes full of historical romance short story collections…]

I'm in Mike Ashley's Shakesperean Whodunnits. Unless it's Volume Two.

Thank you!

Thank you for proving me wrong, and sharing your shelf :) You're giving me some interesting ideas here!

Margaret Frazer, who did the Sister Frevisse and Joliffe the player novels, has some short stories/novellas available, too. These are only as ebooks, though both Kindle and iBooks offer them. (Margaret Frazer died fairly recently, so when I went looking for her next novel...I didn't find one.)
