Back when the cat was allowed to go in and out and there was an open cat door, there were occasions when small furry or feathered creatures made their way into the house – sometimes under their own power, sometimes not. (The most disturbing was the baby opossum that strolled across my bathroom floor one morning when I was in the shower. When you’re nearsighted and looking through a shower door, a baby opossum is pretty much indistinguishable from an ENORMOUS rat.) But it’s something of a mystery to me how I came to be greeted at the door today by a small, bedraggled, but still viable sparrow. It looked back over its shoulder at the cat (who was watching attentively), stared at the open door, and hopped for freedom. I saw it into the rose bush growing up beside the front stairs and choose to believe it recovered and flew away. So the next thing I did was to check all the doors and windows to make sure I hadn’t had human unauthorized visitors. Nope – nothing open. The only possible entrance would be through the screen on the open skylight in the dining room, which has a small tear from when they were working on the roof. So the bird must have landed on the screen, found the tear, and fell or jumped down through it. Talented little bird.
