I was so looking forward to my first open weekend after a couple months of convention marathoning. And then I got a tickle in my lungs. And I dragged myself off to do my coffee shop writing and get a haircut. And then my lungs started burning. And then came the phlegm. And I knew not only was I not going to get all sorts of useful things done over the weekend, but I wasn't going to do anything except lie in bed trying to get my lungs back. This is the current incarnation of whatever my "random respiratory bug" thing seems to be. It used to be it would start in my tonsils and sinuses and then work its way down to the lungs. Now at least it seems to start out in the lungs and mostly leave the sinuses alone. But, oh my, I had no idea you could have that much fluid in your lungs and still breathe successfully.

So Sunday I managed about 2 hours vertical and spent the rest trying to sleep through it (which isn't as easy as you might think when the temperature's in the 90s). Sent off an e-mail to my boss telling him not to expect me in on Monday (which saves me the anguish of trying to make decisions about how I'm feeling at an ungodly hour of the morning). And here it is Monday afternoon and I finally felt up to getting out of bed to do more than heat up some soup. But there will be no blog today. Sorry about that.

Are you going to work tomorrow, or can you stay home one more day?

Whether I can or not, I didn't. Lungs feel cleared up. Brain feels about the same as usual. So there didn't seem much point to spending another day at home. I still don't really know whether it's a cold or allergies, but I suppose it doesn't really matter.

It's smoke. Right? All that smoke.

We were in smoke from when it rolled into Smokane until a week and a half later about half way through North Dakota. My all scenery all the time vacation was a bust, alas. FORTUNATELY my lungs seem to have survived. Here's wishing you dry lungs.

I was perfectly fine when I was in Spokane. I was fine for the next four days after arriving home. It wasn't until the following Saturday that this thing started. So, no, I don't think I can blame the smoke. About 3 or 4 times a year something or other blooms and sets me off. It's often enough and severe enough to be annoying but not often enough to make it worth vigorously pursuing action.

Sorry to hear this - 'gurgle while you walk' is not the greatest.

Yeah. Further analysis has me leaning towards allergies, though if so I'd rather have the version that starts off with sneezing than the one that suddenly dumps a quart of fluid in my lungs. I suppose I should return to experimenting with antihistamines and see if there's anything that can seriously knock this sort of thing out when it first appears. I'm never quite sure what to try to hit it with first.
