Planes and trains and automobiles
Nov. 21st, 2006 04:43 amDateline: Waterville ME
I must be aiming for a personal best of "most different types of transportation involved in a single (short) trip. It started out with the airport shuttle van Saturday morning, plane to Dallas/Ft Worth. 2 hr layover in Dallas which turned into 4 when they announced "unresolved maintenance issues" after having loaded us onto the plane. Then off to BWI, 2 hr layover, Amtrak to Boston, almost 2 hr layover which meant I went ahead and walked from South Station to North Station rather than taking a taxi (thus eliminating a possible taxi item from the checklist). Train again to Portland, then private car, with a stop to hear the Augusta Symphony Orchestra concert before arriving in Waterville. (Mom plays cello in the symphony -- when I visit at Christmas I usually managed to arrive after the holiday concert.) The transportation checklist will be further expanded (on the middle and homeward legs) by bus, another train, another shuttle van, possibly commuter train (to BWI from the con, since I'm not leaving until Monday afternoon), more planes, bus, BART, and Emeryville free shuttle bus. I don't manage to fit in any water-based transportation, though.
In the mean time, I'm getting lots of sleep, playing lots of family card games and Settlers of Catan, and working on some needlework projects. I like vacations.
