(Yet another boring house post) The woodstove (and cabinets) didn't get moved today because the contractor has been under the weather and begged off. I suggested tomorrow. He suggested afternoon. I reminded him that I needed to be able to walk out the door by 2pm. He says, "I wish I'd known that." I pointed out that I'd mentioned it several times previously when we'd talked about scheduling the work for Saturday. I can cope with a rather loose notion of scheduling when there's plenty of time, but this isn't the first time that he's expressed surprise at a deadline that I'd been explicit about every single time the topic came up. (The previous one being "which day did you say the flooring people are going to be here?")
At any rate, all (ALL) the sewing/fabric stuff is put somewhere away. It isn't organized, and it isn't necessarily pretty, but it's away. Tonight I sub in the big computer desk for the smaller wheeled cart (which is going to go bye-bye), move the decrepit old sewing desk elsewhere (it's probably trash rather than a give-away), move the music bookshelf (and contents) into the spare bedroom (which will also eventually serve as a music room) and the instruments into the little nook under the stairs. Then the treadle sewing machine (really must take it off for a tune-up and whatnot so that I can use it) goes out into the living room to serve dual duty as an end table and the bedside table gets it's legs screwed back on. That should be enough for the evening.
Local Bay Area folks: I have the following items to get rid of to anyone willing to pick them up:
* wheeled computer cart, black-finished metal, has keyboard shelf and one other pull-out shelf plus one fixed shelf (i.e., the "floor" of the cart); dimensions 20x28x31 inches
* 10 stacking cassette (audio) tape storage boxes, each holding 42 tapes in 3 drawers, also 2 (or 4?) VCR storage boxes of the same footprint (holding a couple dozen tapes each)
* 4 stacking wire CD racks, each holding ca. 25 CDs -- almost new and excellent condition
* small old battered desk (pencil drawer and 3 side drawers including one that can hold file folders) with awful paint job and in need of some minor repairs to drawer structure -- you really don't want this, it belongs in the trash
* heavy-duty plywood packing crate (16 x 25 x 35 inches external dimensions) -- originally built for transporting my lap harp(s) as airline checked luggage; comes with 4 detachable wheels and sturdy pulling handle; heavy-duty latch closures; has served dual-duty as a car-top carrier and coffee table in a pinch
* two older Singer sewing machines: one is a portable table-top style with knee lever, definitely needs work before it will operate reliably, only sews forwards and no zig-zag, but it's really cool and antique-looking with a wooden base; the other is also portable (with case) but more modern and versatile -- no stitches fancier than zig-zag, foot pedal, could definitely use a tune-up and maybe some work on the tensioning system (I once tried to do some adjustments and ended up with a piece left over) but this was my all-duty machine until I decided I needed something that could handle tent canvas as well

Date: 2006-12-16 07:30 am (UTC)My contractor was on vacation this week, but his work crews were supposed to continue working. It was interesting how they "finished" for the day at about 11 in the morning while he was gone.
Makes it obvious why everything takes longer and costs more in the world of construction.
