have you seen "the sex lives of saints" by virginia burrus?
she talks about this, with a fascinating focus on st. monica, more generally, rather than on orientation / lesbianism as such.

I think that may be where Mills got the term "counter-erotics" from. Will look into it, though it's always possible it may move too far away form my project's interests.
