This is all very nebulous and only-potential at the moment, but there's a possibility I'll be included in an audit team being sent off to look at a couple of our suppliers' facilities in Puerto Rico and the UK later this month. (The audit is related to one of my investigations.) If so, I'll be tacking on at least a few vacation days while I'm there. (In the UK, that is.) More later if it becomes more solid, but my impulsive inclination would be to structure my "free time" around visiting people rather than things.

It's too bad we won't be there! ;)

Er ... well... you did have your chance at me at Consonance last weekend.

I know. It took me awhile to get over being mortified over not recognising you on Thursday, and then I just didn't seem to see you all that much, or maybe I was just completely stressed and worried about being perfect (and not being very good at being perfect) and being exhausted.

What I should have said was that it would be really great to get a chance to spend any amount of time with someone I admire as much as you without various stresses making it difficult. I really am a bit of a mouse when I'm not on, and when I'm on, the only thing I am very good at is being on.

And even better if you can work in both.

Have you been before? Even with the blasted barrier, I found Stonehenge worth seeing.

Fingers crossed.

This would be my 5th time in the UK (although one only consisted of what one could see from a taxi window between the airport and a hotel and back). I got to see Stonehenge before the barriers went up -- that was the '76 trip. Let's see:

1968 - (when I was 10) changing planes in London on the way to Prague for the year

1976 - a few days of misc. sightseeing at the end of our "wander month" after spending the year in Munich

1981 - 3 months mostly up in the hills above Aberystwyth as "companion" to a crazy English woman who ran a tourist bookstore (hey, it was an opportunity and a ... um ... learning experience, yeah, that's right)

1998 - UC Berkeley sent me to a conference in Paris and I expanded it to a month's travel, including about a week in the UK (several days of it spend doing actual dissertation research at the National Library of Wales)

I've also been within the ring -- we lived there in '75. Went back in '78, and it broke my heart to not get inside (but in '75 I'd seen vandalism) but it was still worth it to me to do again.

But as you've been, there are probably other things more worth doing.

Depending on where you end up, you could suggest an impromptu rasfc meet. I know I'm sulking in my tent at the moment with regard to rasfc, but I've met most of the UK contingent face-to-face at various times and would travel to a meet if at all possible.

It's a pity that it's this month you're coming and not early April. I don't suppose there's any chance of extending your stay until Eastercon, which is in Chester this year?

If/when things get more solid, I figured I'd post something on rasfc. Unless the date of the audit gets moved significantly later, Eastercon isn't a possibility. But you're one of the people high on my list of "gee, I'd love to meet them face-to-face some day". (I don't know if you're aware of it, but I remember at least one of your stories from back when I worked at MZB's Fantasy Magazine -- we didn't buy it, but I remember it.)

we didn't buy it, but I remember it.

Thanks. I sent a few stories to MZB's fantasy magazine, and you did buy one, "The House in the Hollow" about fairies and a griddle. But perhaps it was a different one you remember?

No, that is the one I remember -- I was misremembering whether we bought it! (So maybe I mixed it up with remembering one of the unbought ones? I dunno.) I wasn't directly involved with the story selection process, so it is more likely that I'd remember something I actually handled.
