The passport came through, but in the end none of the relevant departments was willing to fund my participation in the trip. Ah well. Here's hoping that the next time the Big B thinks about sending me somewhere, I'll have at least a smidgen more notice. And hey -- now I have a current passport. It's a disappointment, but hardly a tragedy.

Oh poo. The USian customs didn't demonstrate their incompetence. There goes my conspiracy theory.

Except... except... maybe the reason they got your passport organised is because they want to declare you an undesirable alien for some reason while you're out of the country! I'm sure they can think of a reason. Have you ever skipped church on a Sunday? That'd do it! Yes!

Thank goodness! I was beginning to worry that the government was populated by ordinary, reasonable human beings. I'll go back to making my aluminium foil trilby now.

Just noticed you'd added me to your reading list last night. I confess that I, too, am puzzled by the startling competency of government bureaucracy in this case. But maybe it was only because the cosmos knew that plans were going to fall through for some other reason.

Oh, that's a disappointment. But at least you now have a shiny new passport and can visit places at a moment's notice if the opportunity should arise.
