I sometimes try to imagine what the concept "vacation at home" would mean. There are always so many projects to be worked on and, of course, if it's the sort of vacation when people are visiting, then all the usual everyday stuff gets doubled. (I try to remember this when vacationing at other people's houses. People may not ask you to help out with household chores, but don't they deserve a little vacation too?)

Last year, my Christmas vacation coincided with the final deadlines for the baby-name book, which simply meant that I was working in a different location. The trip out here to Maine in August for the 50th wedding anniversary was much more relaxing -- sightseeing, hiking, sailing ... ok, where "relaxing" includes intense physical activity. This week I've got all the mortgage paperwork to go through and house price negotiations to do. (And I'm still having minor panic attacks of the "Ack! What am I getting myself into!" variety.) And since I have the laptop with me there are always little data projects that can be worked on. I'm processing another half dozen data files for the FileMaker version of the Grand Welsh Names Database. I guess this must be what I consider relaxing.

Ah, vacation.

Sometimes I think the term "vacation"=="time to catch up on all of the stuff that I've had to let slide because I didn't have time!"

Nah, that's the definition of "weekend".
