In celebration of odd poetry
Apr. 11th, 2007 11:14 pmVarious items have been floating past on my reading list making reference to April being National Poetry Month, so I thought I'd expose some of my odder compositions. I've always been fond of the challenge of formal structure, which I think is why I have a soft spot for magnetic poetry kits. It ends up being dreadfully impressionistic, what with the limited vocabulary fighting with the drive to say something both coherent and original. Here's one I "wrote" at the Con José worldcon -- they had magnetic poetry kits (and cookie sheets to stick them to) in one of the socializing areas. (Punctuation is, of course, added as needed.)
Few peaches in my garden ever grow,
And stringy pods explode to wingéd flight,
Warped sunsets yet elaborate the snow
To conquer frantic shapes of ugly light
Who need encounter beauty in the glow?
Remembering why soaring clouds collide
Where trudging lakes in ugly beds let go
By water dug into a creature wide.
They told you, "Never say you have to bring
"True thought at late lost life beneath your show,"
It is for him who searches for the spring,
To watch here as the frozen winds do blow.
And though you should remove eternity,
All is secure under the flood of me.
Few peaches in my garden ever grow,
And stringy pods explode to wingéd flight,
Warped sunsets yet elaborate the snow
To conquer frantic shapes of ugly light
Who need encounter beauty in the glow?
Remembering why soaring clouds collide
Where trudging lakes in ugly beds let go
By water dug into a creature wide.
They told you, "Never say you have to bring
"True thought at late lost life beneath your show,"
It is for him who searches for the spring,
To watch here as the frozen winds do blow.
And though you should remove eternity,
All is secure under the flood of me.
